Santhosh Suvarna vs. Ankit Ahuja: Battle for GPI India Supremacy

The current Global Poker Index (GPI) rankings for India in September 2024 shows the current standings of the Indian players on the global poker stage. The GPI assesses player performance across multiple live tournaments ranking players on a dynamic leaderboard reflecting both recent results and long-term consistency.

As of the September 2024 update, the players leading the rankings continue to earn points from high-stakes events like the European Poker Tour and the World Poker Tour Prime. These tournaments witness international talent as well, which makes the GPI one of the most globally inclusive and competitive poker rankings. Players are known to rise up the ranks and drop based on their ability to secure spots in a competitive landscape.

The GPI India rankings in September have seen some switches and swaps as players have moved some positions on the ranking owing to their recent results. 

Santosh Suvarna

Dominating the Indian poker players is Santosh Suvarna leading from the top with 3,127.91 GPI points. After spending several months in second place, India’s only Triton Poker Champion and World Series of Poker (WSOP) bracelet winner has finally managed to take the top spot this month. He was most recently seen grinding at the European Poker Tour – EPT Barcelona held in Barcelona, Spain. He cashed at three events at the series. This included a 10th place finish at the + 5,000 No Limit Hold’em – Mystery Bounty (Event #5) for a paycheque of €10,200. 

Besides, he recorded two final table finishes including a second runner-up place finish at + 3,000 No Limit Hold’em – PokerStars Cuatro Knockout (Event #9) for a sum of €77,900 and 210.72 GPI points, and a fifth-place finish at the No Limit Hold’em – EPT Super High Roller (Event #22) for a payday of €358,000 and 178.93 GPI points. 

Prior to that, he was seen at the Super High Roller Bowl Series Cyprus (SHRB) in Kyrenia, Cyprus. Here he recorded a runner-up finish at the No Limit Hold’em – SHRB #01 8-Max event for $220,000 and 234.25 GPI points.

Ankit Ahuja

On the other hand, Ankit Ahuja who had been dominating the rankings for several months slipped to the second spot this month, switching positions with Santhosh Suvarna. Ankit Ahuja has 3,072.66 GPI points to his credit. He was last seen at the World Poker Tour Prime – WPT Prime UK in Nottingham, England where he took down the No Limit Hold’em – 7 Max High Roller (Event #9) for £33,500. 

Before WPT Prime, Ankit was seen at the European Poker Tour – EPT Barcelona in Barcelona, Spain. Here he was seen pocketing four cashes namely a 105th place finish at + 500 No Limit Hold’em – Mystery Bounty (Event #50) for €1,680, a 141st place finish at + 1,000 No Limit Hold’em – EPT Mystery Bounty (Event #39) for a paycheque of €3,400, a 214th place finish at No Limit Hold’em – Estrellas Cup (Event #18) for €1,110 and a 75th place finish at the No Limit Hold’em – ESPT Main Event (Event #1) for €2,230.

Kartik Ved

Reclaiming his third spot after a month is Kartik Ved, who swapped places with Abhinav Iyer once again this month after a back and forth in the past few months. Kartik enjoys the third place with 2,151.83 GPI points. He was last seen grinding at the World Series of Poker in July. Post that he has not recorded any cash in the live poker circuit. 

Abhinav Iyer

At the fourth place is Abhinav Iyer with 2,114.21 GPI points. His position on the GPI India rankings is majorly credited to his recent outing at the U Series of Poker – USOP Hai Phong in Hai Phong, Vietnam. India’s first solo WSOP bracelet winner claimed the third place at the No Limit Hold’em – Superstar Challenge for $965,000,000 and 183.45 GPI points. 

Sriharsha Doddapaneni

Climbing up the ranks from the seventh place last month to the fifth place this month is Sriharsha Doddapaneni with 1,825.58 GPI points. Thanks to his 12th place finish at the European Poker Tour – EPT Barcelona No Limit Hold’em – EPT Main Event in Barcelona, Spain, he has managed to jump in ranks. For his impressive 12th place finish, the pro bagged €89,550 for 381.09 GPI points. 

Meanwhile Amit Kaushik has maintained his sixth place from last month. Nishant Sharma who wasn’t among the top 10 last month has made a staggering entryat the seventh place owing to his recent Poker Dream results. Natural8 ambassador Kunal Patni has slipped away from the fifth place to the eighth place this month. Meanwhile, Nipun Java and Vishal Ojha have swapped places this month. Nipun takes the 9th place this month against last month;s 10th, while Vishal takes the 10th place.
