How to read Poker Rooms
Walk into a casino card room and the first thing you deal with is not a hand but a board. The brush keeps a waiting list for every game, written as stakes and variant ("1/2 No-Limit", "1/3 NL", "4/8 Limit"), and you give your initials for the games you want. When a seat opens, the floor calls the name. In a busy room on a Friday night, the list is the poker room's real front door.
The second thing to understand is the rake. A card room makes money from the game itself, either by taking a percentage of each pot up to a cap, by charging each player a fee per half hour, or, in tournaments, by adding a fee on top of the buy-in. In many US rooms a jackpot drop is taken as well, funding a bad-beat or high-hand promotion. These charges decide how expensive a game really is. At low stakes, a pot rake with a high cap can take a bigger share of a winning player's profit than any opponent at the table.
How you find a game depends on where you live. In Nevada, New Jersey and many tribal casinos, card rooms run around the clock. California has licensed card clubs that operate under their own rules, and Texas has a network of private social clubs that charge membership or seat fees instead of raking pots. Apps such as Bravo Poker Live and PokerAtlas list which games are running in participating rooms. Outside the United States the picture changes again: in parts of Southeast Asia, casinos admit foreign passport holders only, and some of the region's biggest tournament series run in resorts that locals cannot enter.
Most rooms post their rake on a small card at each table or on the board near the podium, and it is worth reading before you sit. Three numbers matter: the percentage, the cap per hand, and whether the jackpot drop is taken on top of the cap or inside it. Two rooms that both advertise "10 percent" can differ by several dollars a hand once the cap and the drop are counted, and at 30 hands an hour that difference is larger than most players' win rate at low stakes. Higher games often switch to time collection, where the dealer takes a flat amount from every player each half hour. That sounds expensive. In a game with big pots it usually costs less than a pot rake would.
Online rooms work on the same principle with smaller numbers. They rake a lower percentage, often with caps that depend on the stakes and the number of players dealt in, and they return part of it through reward programs, cashback or rakeback deals. Because the effective cost depends on all of those together, the useful way to compare two sites is to work out what each one keeps from the same session, not to compare the headline percentage.
The guides in this section cover each of those steps: finding a room or a club near you, reading a rake structure and comparing the true cost of different rooms, and what to expect in specific destinations from Phnom Penh to Ho Chi Minh City. Rules and fees change, so each guide dates the information it gives. If a figure matters to your decision, confirm it with the room before you travel.
Poker Rooms: questions
How do I get a seat in a casino poker room?
Ask the brush or floor to put your initials on the list for the games you want. When a seat opens you are called, and you buy in at the table or the cage, depending on the room.
What is rake in poker?
The fee the house takes for running the game. In cash games it is usually a percentage of each pot up to a cap, or a time charge per player; in tournaments it is a fee added to the buy-in.
Can I play poker in a Texas card club?
Texas social poker clubs operate by charging membership and seat or time fees rather than raking pots. Their legal status has been argued in court, so check the current position for the club and city you are visiting.
Can foreigners play poker in Vietnam and Cambodia?
Casinos in both countries generally admit foreign passport holders, while locals face restrictions or bans. Rules change, so check the current entry requirements of a specific casino before you go.
