MotorCity Casino, one of the top spots for poker enthusiasts in Detroit, is sadly shutting down its poker room from August 5, 2024.

As reported by Play Michigan, details regarding the closure’s impact on promotions and progressive jackpots, including bad beats, will be provided later. The representative of the MotorCity Casino didn’t reveal the main reason behind the poker room shutdown.

While no one knows the reason, the casino is shutting down its poker room, revenue might not be the main reason behind it. The Michigan Gaming Control Board released Detroit casino’s revenue figures for June, which indicated that all three casinos in Detroit made a revenue of $644.7 million from slot machines and table games in the first half of 2024, with MotorCity being the number 2nd casino in revenue earnings followed by MGM in 1st.

The casino closed its Poker VIP program on July 1, which began the rumors that it might close down the poker room. Previously, the Poker VIP program offered members exclusive access to special offers, gifts, cash, giveaways, and more.

MotorCity was the largest poker room in the city, featuring 37 tables and cash games with stakes as high as $20-$40. Detroit players still have two other options to choose from while playing poker, MGM, and Hollywood Casino. MGM Grand has a 14-table poker room, while Hollywood Casino at Greektown offers 10 tables.

Impact on Poker Players

The closure of MotorCity’s poker room is likely to have a significant impact especially on the local poker community. Many players relied on MotorCity for its variety of thrilling poker games and higher stake offerings, which will be hard to match at the other venues. Additionally, this disappointing closure of the Poker VIP program leaves loyal players without the exclusive benefits they previously enjoyed in Detroit.
