The recent two days saw new poker players winning their first-ever poker title, marking their name in the Asian Poker Tour’s winner list. Among the four winners, Malaysia’s Win Meng Tan won big for his victory in the APT Super High Roller, banking a staggering $68,050, and his first-ever APT title. 

The event also saw two Indian poker players who ran deep, including Ankit Ahuja who failed to make it to the ITM in the SHR event, along with Natural8 Ambassador and Director Kunal Patni who made a runner-up finish in Event #19: Tick Tock BOOM!. Below is the recap of all the four winners.

Win Meng Tan Wins First APT Title at VND 120M APT Super High Roller

Malaysia’s Win Meng Tan captured the spotlight at the 2024 APT Phu Quoc by winning the APT Super High Roller, capturing his inaugural Asian Poker Tour (APT) Title and a career-best payout of VND 1,728,540,000 (~$68,050). It was also his first-ever poker title, since 2014.

The VND 120,000,000 (~$4,745) buy-in two-day event attracted 37 unique entries, besides the 18 re-entries. The impressive turnout ended up doubling the guaranteed VND 3,000,000,000 (~$118,690), creating a total prize pool of VND 5,761,800,000 (~$226,840). Only the top 8 players shared the prize pool.

The final table was formed on the final day, with the elimination of Indian player Ankit Ahuja, who busted on the final table bubble, leaving empty-handed. Singapore’s The Naing leads the final table but was eliminated in 4th place earning VND 610,750,000 (~$24,140), after running into local player Nguyen Tan Phuong. Phoung knocked out Denmark’s Martin Stausholm in 3rd, for VND 806,650,000 (~$31,883), beginning the battle for the title.

The dramatic heads-up play lasted for an hour, with the chip lead swung back and forth between the two players. However, Tan took the lead and eliminated Phoung by flopping a straight. The local poker player, Nguyen Tan Phuong collected his career-best VND 1,250,310,000 (~$49,225).

Nghiem Xuan Thieu Wins Event #12: Sunday Super Stack 

Nghiem Xuan Thieu keeps the 2024 APT Phu Quoc Sunday Super Stack trophy at Home. Thieu opened his live poker career with a victory in the Sunday Super Stack Event, securing his first-ever APT title and his first-ever live poker tournament cash. The local player navigated an impressive field of 217 entrants and defeated American player John Joseph Panish in the heads-up, claiming the top prize money of VND 480,862,000 (~$18,933).

The VND 12,000,000 (~$470) buy-in event drew 177 unique entries, along with 40 re-entries, pushing the guaranteed VND 1,500,000,000 (~$59,345) to VND 2,273,292,000 (~$89,960). Out of the 217 entrants, 31 players shared the total prize pool, with the top 5 players collecting over $5k.

John Joseph Panish collected VND 323,720,000 (~$12,748) for his second-place finish, followed by Thieu’s fellow countrymen Khuc Van Hung in 3rd, who earned VND 228,240,000 (~$9,316). Australian poker pro John Perry, who recently won Event #5: Hyper Turbo High Roller for his first-ever APT title ended up in 5th place VND 146,400,000 (~$5,765).

China’s Youkan Li Wins Daily High Roller Event For His First APT title

China’s Youkan Li, a regular on the Asian poker circuit, claimed his first APT title after winning  Event #13: Single Day High Roller. Li emerged victorious from a field of 17 entries taking home the top prize of VND 569,890,000 (~$ 22,438). Japan’s Motoyoshi Okamura placed second for VND 379,930,000 ($14,957), while China’s Xin Tang rounded out the podium, banking VND 237,460,000 ($ 9,349).

Ivan Ermin Seizes Ships First Poker Title in Event #15: NL Hold’em

Ivan Ermin wins his maiden APT title in Event #15: NL Hold’em. The victory marked his first-ever APT title, moving closer to USD 300,000 in live earnings. The Russian player outlasted a challenging field of 45 entries and overcame fellow countryman Sergei Korzhenko in the heads-up duel, claiming the top prize of VND 234,220,000 (~$9,219).

The VND 16,000,000 (~$630) buy-in event drew 39 unique entries, along with 6 re-entries, easily surpassing expectations. Out of the 45 entrants, 15 players shared the total prize pool, with Ermin taking the lion’s share.

Sergei Korzhenko collected VND 161,330,000 ($6,352) for his second-place finish. While Thailand’s Wipat Udomkanjananan made it to the podium, finishing in 3rd place and earning VND 105,870,000 ($4,168).

Sam Insole Wins Event #19: Tick Tock BOOM! Super Hold’em

Known for his commentary and analysis, Sam Nigel Insole won Event #19: Tick Tock BOOM! Super Hold’em, capturing his first-ever Asian Poker Tour (APT) title and adding VND 51,642,000 (~$2,033) to his resume. Known for his insightful poker commentary, Insole showed he’s got the skills to match his analysis, proving he’s also good at the table.

The VND 7,000,000 (~$275) buy-in event drew 39 unique entries, with 6 re-entries, forming a competitive field of 45 entries. With six places paid, the prize pool was split among the final players.

The final table action saw India’s Kunal Patni, who recently achieved a final table finish in the Vietnam National Cup, end up in 2nd place for VND 35,700,000 ($1,405). China’s Jian Tao took third place, taking home VND 22,790,000 ($897).
