Shiina Okamoto: From Architect to WSOP Champion – Journey of this Rising Poker Star

There are so many talented poker players out there, who continue to rise up the ranks with their dedication and skills. One such player is Japanese female player Shiina Okamoto. Usually, players start from local or domestic or even online poker circuits and gradually rise in stakes. Several players even take years and decades to make it to the Mecca of poker, Las Vegas for the World Series of Poker. 

But that wasn’t the path for Shiina. An architect by profession, Shiina Okamoto recorded some of her first ever live cashes at the World Series of Poker in 2022. And ever since she has not looked back. 

Her first ever live cash was at the Japan Open Poker Tour in May 2021, where she recorded a third place. WIth this, she laid the foundation for being a strong contender in the live tournament scene.

Shiina Okamoto then dived deep into the game to kick-start her career by participating in the 52nd World Series of Poker Las Vegas, the Autumn at Aria Poker Series as well as the European Poker Tour Monte Carlo in 2022. The same year, she also made deep runs at the Venetian DeepStack Championship Series, Las Vegas as well as the European Poker Tour Barcelona. 

In just her second year of playing live poker, Shiina played four of the most prestigious poker events in the world and banked nearly $24,000 in prize money. Interestingly, despite recording such impressive stats, it wasn’t her best year. In fact, the next year, 2023 turned out to be Shiina Okamoto’s break-out year.

At the 2023 World Series of Poker, Okamoto scored in the money (ITM) finishes in five events, including the coveted $10,000 Main Event. Besides, the Japanese player also finished runner-up at the $1,000 Ladies Championship, nailing her career-best of $118,768.

Then in August 2023, Shiina clinched her first-ever live tournament victory by taking down an Asian Poker Tour Incheon side event. Here she took home her first-ever trophy along with a pay cheque of $17,188.

Then came the 2024 season of WSOP, and the architect did not fail to make big waves and grab headlines. After successfully recording two cashes at the 2024 WSOP, Shiina Okamoto took down the Event #71: $1,000 Ladies Championship, beating renowned pro Jamie Kerstetter heads-up. Here she clinched her new career best score of $171,732 as the top prize and her first ever WSOP gold bracelet. Interestingly, this was the same event where she had settled at the runner-up spot the previous year.

Shiina Okamoto, in her four year long live poker career, has accumulated total Live Earnings of a massive $600,733. Her best live cash to date is $171,732, which she banked after taking down the $ 1,000 No Limit Hold’em – LADIES Championship (Bracelet Event #71) at 55th World Series of Poker – WSOP 2024 in Las Vegas for her first ever piece of WSOP gold. 

Shiina ranks 5,066th on the global All Time Money List, according to Hendon Mob and 28th on Japan’s All Time Money List.

Being predominantly a World Series player, Shiina Okamoto flaunts one WSOP gold bracelet which she won in 2022. Besides, she has a total of 10 cashes from the series in just three years, accounting to total earnings of $336,037 alone.

Most recently, Shiina Okamoto was seen grinding at European Poker Tour – EPT Barcelona, held in Barcelona. Here she recorded four cashes. This included a 12th place finish at the € 2,910 + 240 No Limit Hold’em – 6-Handed (Event #60) for $ 7,761, a 43rd place finish at the € 9,700 + 600 No Limit Hold’em – EPT High Roller (Event #52) for a sum of $ 21,080, a 68th place finish at the € 1,716 + 284 + 1,000 No Limit Hold’em – EPT Mystery Bounty (Event #39) for $ 5,746, and a 223rd place finish at the  € 960 + 140 No Limit Hold’em – ESPT Main Event (Event #1) for a paycheck of $ 6,604. Her consistency coupled with the recent deep finishes across prestigious events like EPT Barcelona make a her a rising star and a player to
watch out for in the global poker scene.
