Kathy Liebert was born on October 1st, 1967, in Nashville, Tennessee. She was a middle child in the family, and like any other American family, they used to play low-stakes poker. However, unlike most 12-year-olds, she became obsessed with the game and even bought a book called “How to Win at Poker” to up-skill herself.
She graduated from Marist College with a degree in business and finance. Due to her degree, she began her career as a business analyst for Dun & Bradstreet. Even though she had an excellent job, her heart was always with Poker.
Liebert’s mother encouraged her to follow her passion. She embarked on her poker career as a prop player in Colorado, where she relocated to improve her poker skills.
She found mostly small-stakes games in the area and began playing more frequently. She read additional books on poker and made friends within the poker community.
Kathy Liebert’s Rise in Live Poker & Her Overall Career
In 1994, her friends recommended that she should take a trip to Sin City Las Vegas to participate in some live tournaments. Her first major live event was in the Gold Coast Open. She participated in the $120 Omaha Hi/Lo, where she struck a deal to split the top prize.
She did that again and made over $24k in a week. If you look at her live tournament history, she played very carefully and always ended up at the final table. Her first six-figure prize came in 1997’s $3,000 NLHE in the WSOP, where she finished in 2nd place, earning $123,690.
She continued to make her name in the WSOP as she secured 17th place in both the 1998 and 2000 World Series of Poker Main Event.
She made history in 2002, when she won the first Party Poker Million No Limit Hold’em Championship, to become the first woman to win $1 million in a tournament. She beat Phil Hellmuth, Chris, and Mel Judah on her way to victory in the PartyPoker event.
In 2004, Liebert secured her first gold bracelet in the $1,500 Limit Shootout event, earning over $110,000. That year, she became one of the three women to win an open event, along with Cyndy Violette and Annie Duke. She continued her impressive journey and went on to win several titles before finishing 3rd in the 2008 WSOP Main Event for $306,064. 2008 also saw her finish 3rd in the C$ 10,000 + 300 No Limit Hold’em at the WPT North American Poker Championship. After that, she scored plenty of final table finishes and several victories, including the victory in BIG $500 8-Max (Online Ring Event 8) at the World Series of Poker Circuit – WSOPC ONLINE Series in 2022. Currently, she is competing at the WSOP 2024 and has already notched up more than a half dozen of cashes.
As of 2024, Liebert has 175 cashes in WSOP events, with a staggering $1,769,076 in total WSOP earnings. In her 30-year poker career, Liebert has nearly $7 million in live tournament earnings and is regarded as one of the prominent female poker figures in the game.

Her contributions to the game led to her induction into the Women in Poker Hall of Fame in 2010.
In 2022, the Poker Hall of Fame’s inductee nominated Liebert for the Poker Hall of Fame. But sadly, she couldn’t make it to the final.
In 2024, they nominated Liebert once again for the Poker Hall of Fame, and we are just a few days away from finding out who will be inducted into this year’s PHOF.
