The 2024 WSOPC Marrakech Main Event has crowned its worthy winner in UK’s Max Deveson.
Deveson eventually bested France’s Antoine Delorme in a roller-coaster heads-up battle lasting more than two hours. For his grand victory, he received €200,000 in top prize, while Delorme banked €143,000.
The tournament drew an impressive 1,163 entrants each paying the €1,500 buy-in. The field also had the 2019 WSOP Main Event champion Hossein Ensan who made the money finishing in 100th place.
It was a three-day tournament where only 21 players returned on Day 3, all with dreams of winning the coveted WSOPC ring and top prize. Filippo Lazzaretto who had started the day as a shortest stack became the first elimination of the day, finishing 21st place for 73,000 MAD. He was followed by Day 1A chip leader Jean-Pierre Grand-Moursel (20th, 88,000 MAD), Jawad Bengourane (19th, 88,000 MAD), Mostafa Essanhaji (18th, 88,000 MAD), and Endravuz Lahdo who fell in 17th for 110,000 MAD.
Eliminations continued and by the time the tournament reached its final table, Italy’s Nicola Pezzullo had built a massive chip lead. However, he could not go all the way, eventually falling in 4th to Sandro Jose Alves when his K-9 ran into A-K. Down to the final three players, Deveson needed a little luck to overcome the pocket queens of Alves and he was lucky enough to hit a runner-runner flush to bust Alves in 3rd Place for 1,100,000 MAD and enter the heads-up play as the massive chip leader.
The heads-up battle looked one-sided with Deveson quickly extending his lead to 80% of the chips in play. However, the situation changed with Delorme doubling up twice. Later, holding king-jack, Delorme had the best hand preflop, but Deveson hit a pair with king-three to double up and claw his way back. Finally, the two-hour battle ended when Delorme, with just 9 big blinds, called Deveson’s pre-flop shove.
