In a landmark development for poker, the Global Poker Index (GPI) has re-launched its prestigious Player of the Month honor, which seeks to recognize the player who has amassed the most GPI points in eligible tournaments from the previous month’s calendar. This highly coveted monthly honor not only underscores exceptional individual performances but also influences the broader community by showcasing the top players who are shaping the competitive landscape.

The return of this monthly honor not only underscores the significance of consistent performance in the highly competitive world of poker but also also enables players to gain recognition for their achievements in real-time, adding another layer of excitement and inspiration for those competing on the global stage.

Adrian Mateos Becomes the First Players To Receive the Honor

The first player to receive this honor upon its return is none other than Spain’s Adrian Mateos, one of the top players globally. The renowned Winamax brand ambassador currently tops the GPI standings for Europe and is ranked second globally. He leads his country’s all-time money list and is ranked 9th globally with $48,736,110 in live cashes. He is one of Europe’s top poker players and has performed consistently in recent festivals in Las Vegas this summer.

The four-time WSOP bracelet winner 2017 GPI Player of the Year notched five results in Las Vegas throughout the month, earning 1,224.58 points. The three-time Spanish National Player of the Year added over $439,203 to his Spanish All-Time Money-Leading resume, thanks to his deep runs in the World Series of Poker (WSOP) 6-Max Championship and the WSOP Mystery Bounty. He followed those up with impressive results in the World Poker Tour (WPT) Alpha8 Trifecta, a PokerGO Tour (PGT) Aria High Roller, and a 317th-place finish in the WSOP Main Event.

His consistent performances in Las Vegas this summer not only earned him the Player of the Month title for July 2024 but also propelled him to the top of the 2024 GPI Player of the Year leaderboard, ahead of Jesse Lonis, who leads the GPI global ranking with an impressive 4,115.58 points, thanks to his consistent performances and top cashes over the last 12 months.

COVID Led To Suspension Of GPI Monthly Honor In Early 2020

Started in 2018, the GPI monthly honor was actually suspended in early 2020 due to the COVID pandemic, which halted live poker tournaments all over the world for nearly a year.

The GPI/THM president Eric Danis stated that the Global Poker Index’s domain will soon be updated with the new monthly Player of the Month honorees. The honor will take into account only the top five GPI points-eligible results.
