Doug Polk teased the sale price at the end of his announcement video and then stopped before saying it. That was on August 1, 2025, when the former heads-up specialist confirmed that ClubWPT Gold had bought Upswing Poker, the training company he, Ryan Fee and Matt Colletta had launched in December 2015. Nobody outside the deal learned the number.
What the poker world did learn was unusual enough. A training site, built to teach players how to win, had been bought by a company that runs the games.
How Upswing got here
Upswing grew out of the mid-2010s, when Polk was among the best-known heads-up No-Limit Hold’em players in the world and Fee was a winning high-stakes cash player. Their pitch was simple: courses taught by coaches who had proven they could beat tough games, not by marketers.
Polk’s YouTube channel, launched in 2016, worked as Upswing’s marketing tool. Polk posted hand breakdowns and commentary to drive viewers toward the paid content, and the channel became a brand of its own. Over the years Upswing built a catalogue of signature courses, and its flagship subscription, the Upswing Lab, became one of the standard study products for recreational and mid-stakes players in English.
Polk’s own interests spread out as the business matured. He became a co-owner of The Lodge Card Club in Round Rock, Texas, alongside the vloggers Brad Owen and Andrew Neeme, and the card club gave him a stake in live poker as well as online study. Before the acquisition he had also signed on as an ambassador for ClubWPT Gold, promoting the site across his channels.
What ClubWPT Gold is
ClubWPT Gold is an online poker room that operates under the sweepstakes model. Players buy “gold coins” for play-money games and receive sweepstakes coins as a bonus, and sweepstakes coins can be redeemed for prizes. That model lets sites run in many U.S. states that have never licensed online poker, which is where the large majority of American players live.
It carries the World Poker Tour name, and the brand connection matters: WPT has run televised tournaments since 2002 and gives the site a recognisable identity in a crowded sweepstakes market. The model is also under pressure. Several state legislatures and regulators moved against sweepstakes casinos and poker in 2025, and the list of states where the model is available has been shrinking.
If you are reading about this deal from a state that licenses online poker, such as New Jersey or Pennsylvania, the sweepstakes question may seem remote. For a player in Texas or Florida, it is the whole story.
What changed for Upswing members
According to Polk’s announcement, very little changed at once. He said he would stay involved to help with the transition, and the existing coaches and staff kept their roles. ClubWPT Gold was described as a partner more than an operator of the training business.
The visible change was a bundle.
Buying certain Upswing courses or a Lab subscription came with sweepstakes coins credited on ClubWPT Gold, with larger courses carrying larger amounts. The logic is plain enough: a player who has just studied a preflop course can try it at the tables the same week.
The second promise was Upswing Lab 2.0. Polk described a rebuilt version with quizzes, more interaction with coaches, community features and a public roadmap of improvements. For a subscription product that had been running for years, a redesign was overdue, and the acquisition gave him the budget to say so publicly.
Why an operator buys a poker trainer
Operators and training sites have historically kept their distance. Trainers teach players how to take money from weaker opponents, and operators need weaker opponents to keep coming back. Putting the two under one roof raises an obvious question, and the industry press noted that a merger of this kind was rare.
The commercial case runs the other way. A sweepstakes site competes for players who are new to online poker. Upswing’s audience is made of exactly those people: hobbyists who watch strategy videos and want to improve. Owning the brand they already trust gives ClubWPT Gold a direct line to them, and gives Upswing a reason to exist alongside free YouTube content and cheaper solver-based tools.
Study products have also changed. When Upswing launched, a course was a sequence of videos. By 2025 the market was full of GTO trainers and solver interfaces, many of them subscription apps. Some background on how those tools work is in the site’s primer on poker solvers for beginners, and the debate over third-party tools on real-money sites is covered in the piece on HUDs and safety measures.
Polk’s position
Polk has been one of the loudest voices in American poker for a decade, from his heads-up grudge match with Daniel Negreanu, which ran from late 2020 into early 2021, to his commentary on cheating scandals. Selling the company that made his YouTube career possible marked a change in where he spends his time. He framed it as giving Upswing “the tools and resources” to grow under new ownership, after what he called an almost decade-long run on its own.
He did not say what he would build next. The price stayed off camera too, and as of the announcement neither ClubWPT Gold nor Upswing had published it.
