2024 has been so far good for the 48-year-old poker pro, Chris Moneymaker, who sparked poker boom with his main event victory in 2003. 24 players returned to Day 3 of the Main Event, all aiming to finish at the final table. Oscar Alache kicked off Day 3 as the chip leader while Moneymaker had an average chip stack, but he silently climbed the ladder to position himself in 3rd place. The final table kicked off after 6 hours of poker action.

Short-stacked Mario Miciforio was the first player to fall. He finished in 9th place ($17,970) after his A-9 couldn’t withstand Bartolo Belluscio’s K♥-Q♠. The remaining 8 players returned to the final day, eyeing to finish in the top 2 for a six-figure score.

8-handed play lasted for two hours, as the game turned into an online shove fest, and players were eliminated very quickly. Moneymaker knocked out Bartolo Belluscio in 6th place for $36,260. Moneymaker then narrowed down the field to 4 after eliminating Gaspar Fernandez (5th place – $45,315).

The next elimination was full of thrills as Oscar Alache, holding A-K, moved all-in against Francisco Benitez’s Q-10. The flop card came out 10-Q-6, giving Benitez two pairs. Turn card came down J, giving Alache a straight, but a 10 on the river sealed the deal for Benitez. Oscar Alache earned $59,125 for his 4th-place finish.

Gonzalo Jose (3rd place – $81,230) with K-Q shoved all-in, and Moneymaker with his pocket 3s called it from the big blind. Neither of them hit a set, but Moneymaker’s pocket pairs ended up being the superior hand against Jose’s unpaired hand.

Moneymaker held a massive chip lead in the heads-up play that Benitez couldn’t chop down. In a post-flop action, after making two pairs, Moneymaker moved all in with his K♥︎5♦. On a board consisting of 10♥︎5♣︎4♥︎K♦4♣︎, Benitez with 9♣︎5♥︎ called the all-in and ended up busting out in 2nd place for $126,020.
