Yakiv Syzghanov outlasted a competitive field of 758 challengers in the 2024 World Poker Tour Prime Aix-en-Provence €1,100 buy-in no-limit hold’em main event, winning an impressive $144,612 and the championship trophy. His victory also earned him a $10,400 seat in the 2024 WPT World Championship in Vegas. Close on his heels was Laurent Michot who banked $88,892 as the runner-up.
“Today, for me, was very important. It is unbelievable, an amazing feeling. A dream come true, 100%,” Syzghanov told WPT reporters after coming out on top. “Thank you, all people thank, you, because it was very hard. I play six days in a row, twelve hours. I busted in all flights… I try, try try, and go into turbo, and you see I win.” Syzghanov said after claiming the coveted victory in the WPT main event.
This victory was the largest live tournament score for Ukraine’s Syzghanov, surpassing his $13,353, which he had bagged for a 13th-place finish in the €1,350 mini main event at the 2022 World Series of Poker Europe series. He now has over $163,000 in recorded live tournament earnings under his belt.
The final day saw eight players, with Laurent Michot and Syzghanov in lead. Gilles Michaud (8th) and Erich Tedeschi (7th) were the early eliminations of the day. Syzghanov scored his first elimination of the day when his top pair of aces prevailed against the king-high flush draw of Andre Volpi (6th). He then eliminated David Sacksick (5th) whose pocket fours ran into the pocket tens of Syzghanov to bring the field to four. The next player to fall was Dylan Cechowski whose A-Q failed to outpower pocket nine of Michot. Cechowski earned $48,782 as the fourth-place finisher.
Michot then railed Frederic Normand, who earned $66,127 for his third-place finish. Heads-up began with Michot holding nearly a 3:1 chip lead over Syzghanov. The latter was able to edge his way into the lead and eventually seize the title. On the final hand, Syzghanov shoved from the big blind with Ac 3d and Michot called with 5h 5c. The board ran out Ks Kc 8d Ad Kh to give Syzghanov a winning full house, eliminating Michot in the second place. Michot walked away with $88,892 as the runner-up finisher.
