The poker industry in Asia has witnessed rapid growth in the past few years, thanks to the efforts and significant contributions of key individuals – Danny McDonagh, Paul Phua, Victor Chong and Alex Wong. They continue to drive the game’s evolution across the continent. These instrumental industry leaders have an intense passion for the game and have channelled this passion into shaping the poker landscape in Asia through their work as operators, organisers, and influencers. 

Be it launching new poker tournaments to hosting and organising major live tournaments, these individuals have helped shape poker into a serious and professional endeavour in countries such as India, China, the Philippines, and Vietnam.

Their significant contributions have resulted in the rise of well-structured poker events, such as the Asian Poker Tour (APT) and the U Series of Poker (USOP), which have become not only widely popular in the Asian continent but also attracted international attention, thus accelerating the opportunities, reach and presence of Asian poker players on the global stage. 

By encouraging local talent and building opportunities for both amateur and professional players, these industry professionals have helped cement Asia as a major hub for poker.

Danny McDonagh

Danny McDonagh is a well-known figure in the international poker industry. As a tournament director, he has greatly contributed to the growth of poker in Asia. McDonagh is particularly prominent in Asia. He has served as the tournament director for the Asia Pacific Poker Tour (APPT) under PokerStars. 

During this role, Danny played a crucial part in establishing APPT events across various Asian countries. He contributed to introducing high-quality tournament standards, and growing poker’s popularity across the continent. His contributions to poker in Asian continent are further highlighted by his advisory role with the Asian Poker Tour (APT). He offers guidance on event organization and ways to enhance player experiences. His deep understanding and expertise in the regional poker landscape have made him a significant and noteworthy figure in Asia’s poker circuit.

Paul Phua

Paul Phua is a well-known Malaysian businessman and high-stakes poker player. He is also a major contributor to the growth of poker in Asia. Paul is widely recognized as a co-founder of the prestigious Triton Poker Series. This high-stakes series is known for organizing some of the world’s highest buy-in tournaments, and attracting the top players.

As he juggles between being a high-stakes player and organizer, Phua, the former GPI Industry Person Of the Year Award winner, has significantly contributed in elevating the visibility of poker in Asia. Not only has he inspired a generation of players to pursue the game professionally, but has also provided an authentic stage for poker players to show their skills. 

Victor Chong

Victor Chong is a professional poker player also from Malaysia who has carved a name for himself in the Asian poker scene. Victor Chong has played a crucial role in the Asian poker scene not only as an exceptional player but also as a special advisor to the Asian Poker Tour (APT). 

As an advisor of APT, Chong’s role and expertise helps in shaping key decisions regarding tournament formats, prize structures, and event locations, thus ensuring that the APT series builds and maintains its reputation as one of Asia’s premier poker tours. Chong’s involvement is quintessential for the continued expansion of APT across the continent. It is known for drawing in both local talent and international players, further pushing poker’s presence in the region.

Alex Wong

Alex Wong worked as the advisor for the U Series of Poker (USOP). He also served as the Chief Operating Officer (COO) for the poker brand. His role as the advisor was instrumental in shaping the vision and direction of the USOP.

Through his experience and mastery, he ensured that the USOP adopts a player-centric approach to tournaments across regions such as Taiwan, Vietnam, and beyond. Notably, it was under Alex Wong’s leadership that the USOP flourished and went on to become a significant poker event in the live Asia poker circuit.

While Alex may have left the U Series of Poker to launch an exciting new brand, ‘Players Series, his impactful contributions to the USOP brand still echo loudly within the poker community.
