Big Moves in GPI Rankings: Adrian Mateos Surges to 2nd, Punnat Punsri Makes a Big Leap

The Global Poker Index (GPI) rankings are calculated based on players’ results over a rolling period, typically two to three years, emphasizing recent performances in live tournaments. Players earn points for their finishes, with higher placements in more prestigious events awarding more points. The rankings provide a comprehensive measure of a player’s success and consistency across various tournaments.

These moves in the GPI rankings highlight the dynamic nature of competitive poker, where players’ positions can change rapidly based on their performances in live events. With Punnat Punsri from Thailand making a big jump and Adrian Mateos from Spain moving up to 2nd place, the GPI rankings reflect the ever-evolving landscape of professional poker, where new talents emerge and established stars continue to shine.

Leading the GPI ranking is still Jesse Lonis who continues to dominate for 16 weeks straight now. He leads the rankings with 4,141.54 GPI points to his credit. He was most recently seen grinding at the European Poker Tour – EPT Barcelona in Spain. Here he took the 47th place at No Limit Hold’em (Event #12) for €81,200. 

Prior to this, he was seen at the Seminole Hard Rock Poker Open (SHRPO) in Hollywood, Florida in the United States. He finished 13th for $49,000 at the No Limit Hold’em – SHRPO Championship (Event #42) held at Hard Rock Hotel & Casino.

Making significant progress is Adrian Mateos who moved up to the second spot as compared to the third last month. He has been holding the second spot for a little over four weeks now with 3,998.69 GPI points to his credit. The Spanish player was most recently seen at the Super High Roller Bowl Series Cyprus (SHRB) which was held in Kyrenia, Cyprus. He claimed four cashes in the series including three final table finishes and one title. He claimed the winner’s podium at the No Limit Hold’em – Mystery Bounty SHRB #06 6-Max event and pocketed $162,000, gaining 303.39 GPI points. He narrowly missed the title at the No Limit Hold’em – SHRB #03 6-Max event bagging $231,000 and 238.37 GPI points.

The other two events that he cashed at included No Limit Hold’em – SHRB #05 8-Max wherein he finished 4th for $420,000 and 182.09 GPI points, and the 3rd place finish at No Limit Hold’em – SHRB #04 7-Max for $262,000.

The third place is taken by China’s Tony “Ren” Lin, who slipped away to third place from last month’s second place. He has been sitting in third place with a total of 3,969.27 GPI points for four weeks now. He was most recently seen at the European Poker Tour – EPT Barcelona in Spain, wherein he finished 2nd place for  €71,200 at the + 5,000 No Limit Hold’em – Mystery Bounty (Event #5) for 243.52 GPI points. 

Prior to this, he cashed at the third place at the Super High Roller Bowl Series Cyprus (SHRB)Kyrenia in Cyprus at the No Limit Hold’em – SHRB #02 7-Max event for $158,000 in prize money and 204.68 GPI points.

Another major change was seen in the GPI rankings this month, Punnat Punsri who jumped to fourth place from fifth place last month. He sits in fourth place with 3,775.01 GPI points. The Thailand-based player was last seen recording cashes at WSOP 2024. He added a total of 9 cashes from WSOP 2024 to his poker resume. The best of these was $523,648, which he claimed after taking the runner-up place at No Limit Hold’em – 8-Handed (Bracelet Event #87).

Making a dramatic and loud entry on the fifth place is David Coleman. Interestingly, he makes an entry into the top 10 this month and lands directly at the staggering 5th place. He has been enjoying fifth place for 2 weeks now with 3,719.88 GPI points to his kitty. Thanks to his recent performances at the EPT Barcelona and Seminole Hard Rock Poker Open (SHRPO), he has managed to give the pros ranking on the GPI charts a real run for their money. 

David Coleman most recently took the 4th place at European Poker Tour – EPT Barcelona, Spain + 3000 No Limit Hold’em – PokerStars Cuatro Knockout (Event #9) and pocketed €59,100. Prior to this, he was seen grinding at the Seminole Hard Rock Poker Open (SHRPO) held in Hollywood, Florida, United States. Here he claimed two cashes, namely a second place finish at No Limit Hold’em – Deep Stack 8-Handed (Event #58) for a paycheque of $198,900 and 302.51 GPI points and a 86th place finish at No Limit Hold’em – SHRPO Championship (Event #42) for $11,200.
