Event #16: Red Dragon Championship

The series headliner Red Dragon Championship Event surpassed all expectations after a smashing turnout of 1,137 entries were recorded across its four flights. Running from July 30- August 4, the Championship event drew 1,337 to crush its KRW 1,680,000,000 ($1,236,390) and generate a record KRW 2,567,843,000 ($1,875,480) in prize pool, which was finally shared by the top 201 places. After four days of intense play, China’s Zhang Mai overcame the massive field to secure his best career live cash, amounting to KRW 392,403,000 (~USD 287,400). Zhang also walked away as the festival’s biggest earner with just one cash, enough to propel him to the top of the list.

He eventually outlasted final table captain Nana Nakamura from Japan who was able to chip up and overtake the lead in heads-up. However, she could not carry her momentum and was left short when she ran 8d 7d into the Ah 10d of Zhang who rivered a trip with aces to win the pot, leaving his opponent short.

While she fought back and doubled up,  Zhang regained control and was able to finish off things quickly from there on. On the final hand, Zhang shoved all-in and Nana Nakamura called for her last 8,700,000. She held Ac 8c against Zhang’s Ad 6c. The board ran out 5h 6h 9d 9s Jc to give Zhang the title.
