Crandell Addington passed away at the age of 85 on April 14, 2024. The Poker Hall of Famer and the legendary Texas road gambler has played a pivotal role in the early years of no-limit hold’em at the World Series of Poker (WSOP). He made a record of reaching the final table of WSOP Main Event in seven consecutive years during the 1970s.
Addington is best known for his significant contribution to the WSOP and the popularity of no-limit hold ’em. He was inducted into the Poker Hall of Fame in 2005. Known for his stylish attire, which is how he earned his nickname “Dandy.” he was a distinguished figure in the poker world. At the 2012 Poker Hall of Fame induction ceremony for Eric Drache and Sailor Roberts, Addington accepted the award on behalf of Roberts, showcasing his ongoing presence and impact within the poker industry.
While Crandell Addington never won the Main Event or earned any WSOP bracelets, he notably secured second place three times in 1974, 1976, and 1978. His most substantial tournament success is attributed to the 1969 Texas Gamblers Reunion held in Reno, Nevada.
This event played a pivotal role in shaping the inaugural WSOP, which took place the following year. Addington was among the seven participants in the original 1970 WSOP, where the winner, Johnny Moss, was determined through a vote among the seven players.
Poker wasn’t Addington’s only claim to fame. Addington graduated from Southwestern University with a degree in economics and accounting from Southwestern University. He returned to the San Antonio region and started his venture in the oil industry, founding Addington Enterprises. He also served as the CEO, Chairman, and Director of Phoenix Biotechnology, a prominent organization focused on cancer treatment research.
A day of remembrance ceremony for him is scheduled for April 26 at Paisanos Restaurant in Lincoln Heights, Texas, near his residence in San Antonio.
