Japan’s Shiina Okamoto, who placed runner-up to USA’s Tammy Abraham in last year’s ladies’ event, etched her name into poker history today by winning her maiden gold bracelet in Event #71: $1,000 Ladies No Limit Hold’em at the 2024 World Series of Poker (WSOP). An architect by profession, Okamoto topped a massive field of 1,245 competitors and defeated WPT Global Ambassador and two-time WSOP Circuit ring winner Jamie Kerstetter in heads-up, claiming  a career-best $171,732.

This tournament ran for four days and generated $1,095,600, which was finally shared by the top 187 players. Plenty of notables finished deep, including two-time WSOPC ring winner Kasey Lyn Mills (31st- $4,958), Jennifer Shahade (29th – $4,958), Robyn Alvis (27th – $4,958), Monika Zukowicz (22nd – $5,939), Nadya Magnus (19th – $5,939), Cherish Andrews (16th – $7,225, 2023 European Poker Tour Prague final table finisher Marle Spragg (11th – $11,191), and Mor Kamber (5th – $43,125).

WSOP 2024 Event #71: $10,000 LADIES Championship NLH Quick Recap

Just six players returned for the fourth and final day of play, with Kerstetter in the lead and Okamoto in second chip position. Kerstetter scored the first knockout by busting France’s Cecile Ticherfatine who got it in with K-J trailing the K-Q of Kerstetter who rivered a flush to bust Ticherfatine in sixth place.

The next to fall was Mor Kamber, a former military intelligence officer turned poker product manager, whose jack-high flush with J-7 of diamonds lost to Kerstetter’s ace-high flush.

After securing a double up, Linda Durden shoved her last few blinds with pocket nines and Kerstetter called with A-7 suited. Kerstetter flopped an ace to take the lead. Durden found no help on the turn or river and was eliminated in fourth place for $58,910 – the largest recorded score for the American player.

Despite scoring that knockout, Liao was a clear short stack moving into three-handed action. A preflop cooler ended her journey, with her pocket queens running into the pocket kings of Okamoto. A king high flop left Liao with little hope, and the turn 4h and 3s, ended her journey in third for $81,573.

Heads-up saw Kerstetter holding over a 3:2 chip lead over Okamoto, who was able to pull away by the time the final hand arose. Finally, Kerstetter limped with Ad 7h and Shiina Okamoto checked from the big blind with 9s 5d. The flop came down Ac 10s 9d and Okamoto check-called a 200,000 bet from Kerstetter. The 5h turn gave Okamoto two pair and the lead. She checked and Kerstetter bet 550k. Okamoto check-raised all-in and Kerstetter called. The 2h on the river eliminated Kerstetter in second place. She earned a career-best $114,479 as the runner-up, taking her earnings to over $1.1 million.
