The 2021 season of the World Series of Poker (WSOP) is running full steam in Las Vegas. As pros as well as poker enthusiasts from around the world gather at the Mecca of Poker for the annual poker celebration, new records and milestones are being achieved. Likewise, the world of poker is being introduced to new and talented players who are making a name for themselves at the WSOP 2024.
Meanwhile, as the series progresses and more events name their champions, several poker players are also earning Global Poker Index (GPI) points for their impressive finishes and titles. Consequently, the GPI rankings are also expected to witness some massive changes in the next few days.
Among the thousands of players aiming for gold at the WSOP 2024 are Indian players as well who are faring exceptionally well. So far the Indian contingent has managed to record some impressive cashes. Subsequently, the GPI points awarded to the Indian players have also affected the GPI ranking for Indian players based on their results at the WSOP.
Leading the pack of Indians in the GPI rankings is pro player Ankit Ahuja. Notably, Ankit Ahuja has been dominating the top spot for quite some weeks now. He leads the GPI Indian rankings with 2,977.95 points to his kitty. Interestingly, he ranks 64th on the overall GPI rankings with that score, which is an incredible feat.
Ankit Ahuja has recorded three cashes so far at the WSOP 2024. The first was a 130th place finish at Bracelet Event #28 No Limit Hold’em – Freezeout for $3,661. This was followed by a 77th finish from a field of 2,212 entries at Bracelet Event #48 Pot Limit Omaha – 8-Handed for $3,400. His most recent and the biggest cash so far came from Bracelet Event #49 No Limit Hold’em – Freezeout, wherein he finished 26th out of 1,252 entries. He bagged $18,225 in cash prizes and 211.25 GPI points.
Second on the list is Santhosh Suvarna with 2,782.59 GPI points. Suvarna too has been at the runner-up spot for a long time. Additionally, he ranks 93rd in the overall GPI rankings, which makes Ankit Ahuja and Santhosh Suvarna the only two Indians among the top 100 in GPI rankings.
Santhosh Suvarna has recorded just one cash at the WSOP so far but it is a significant one. He finished 13th among 272 entries at Bracelet Event #21 $25,000 buy-in No Limit Hold’em – High Roller – 6-Handed. India’s first and only Triton Poker champion, Santhosh Suvarna, pocketed a paycheque of $79,084 and 240.08 GPI points for this achievement.
At the third spot is India’s first online WSOP bracelet winner Kartik Ved. Notably, Kartik Ved ranked fourth in May 2024 and has managed to hop one spot higher this month. He sits at the third spot with 2,172.38 GPI points to his credit. At the ongoing 55th WSOP series, Kartik Ved has managed to cash at two events so far. First, at Bracelet Event #30, No Limit Hold’em/Pot Limit Omaha Deepstack – 8-Handed wherein he pocketed $1,201 and 52.67 GPI points for his 368th finish. This was followed by bagging $5,455 and 89.10 GPI points for his 372nd finish at Bracelet Event #38 No Limit Hold’em – Monster Stack.
Following Kartik Ved, at the fourth spot is India’s first solo bracelet winner Abhinav Iyer, who has slid down from his third place in May 2024 to fourth in June 2024 with 2,082.59 points. Abhinav Iyer also cashed at Bracelet Event #38 No Limit Hold’em – Monster Stack, wherein he finished 639th out of 8,703 entries for $3,663.
Coming in at the fifth spot is Kunal Patni who has made the most significant progress compared to last month. From ranking 10th on the GPI India Rankings in May 2024, the Natural8 India ambassador has managed to jump to the fifth spot in June 2024. He sits at the fifth spot with 1,737.27 points. Kunal Patni also has had just one cash at WSOP 2024. This was at Bracelet Event #38 No Limit Hold’em – Monster Stack, wherein he finished 556th among 8,703 entries for $3,998 and 81.36 GPI points.
Among the other Indians on the GPI India rankings, Amit Kaushik has slipped one position from fifth place in May 2024 to sixth spot in June 2024. At the seventh spot this month is Nishant Sharma who has moved up from the ninth place in May to the seventh place in June 2024.
Zarvan Tumboli, who ranked sixth in May 2024 on GPI India rankings, has landed at the eighth spot in June 2024. Similarly, Nipun Java has slid down from the seventh spot last month to the ninth place this month. Finally, making an entry at the 10th spot is Sriharsha Doddapaneni. He makes his debut among the top 10 in June 2024.
