Tobey Maguire may be best known for swinging across skyscrapers as Spider-Man, but off-screen, he’s made quite a name for himself in the high-stakes world of poker. With sharp instincts and strategic prowess, Maguire transitioned from Hollywood A-lister to one of the most talked-about celebrity poker players. His journey through tournament tables and exclusive underground cash games has earned him not just headlines but millions of dollars—and a legendary status in celebrity poker circles.

Tobey Maguire’s Early Life and Introduction to Poker

Tobey Maguire was born on June 27, 1975. The 49-year-old actor has been involved in films and television since childhood, which is how he met his best friend, actor and fellow poker enthusiast Leonardo DiCaprio. Maguire’s acting career skyrocketed following his iconic role as Spider-Man in 2002.

Beyond the silver screen, Tobey Maguire is an avid poker player, frequently participating in high-stakes private cash games. He began drawing media attention for his poker activity in the early 2000s. While there’s no detailed record of how he first got into the game, it’s widely assumed he picked it up during his teenage years, as poker is a popular pastime in American culture.

Tobey Maguire Poker Career Highlights and Winnings

In 2004, Tobey Maguire scored his first live tournament cash, finishing 5th in the Mirage Poker Showdown for $5,271. He followed it up with a money finish in the $10,000 Main Event, earning $16,201. That same year, Maguire won the National Championship of Poker’s $2,000 Phil Hellmuth Invitational Tournament, taking home $95,480.

Between 2005 and 2007, Maguire also competed in the World Series of Poker (WSOP) Main Event, with his best performance in 2007 when he cashed for $39,445. During this time, he sought coaching from seven-time WSOP bracelet winner Daniel Negreanu, which helped sharpen his poker skills even further. His final recorded live tournament cash was in 2007. Over the course of his brief tournament career, Maguire accumulated close to $220,000 from just 12 cashes.

Private Cash Games

Though his public tournament play ended in 2007, Maguire found a more discreet and profitable outlet for his poker interests—exclusive private cash games with Hollywood’s elite. In 2020, television producer Houston Curtis published a book titled Billion Dollar Hollywood Heist, revealing that he and Maguire launched a regular high-stakes poker game in 2004. Their goal? To win big from wealthy amateurs.

These games attracted stars like Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, and, of course, Leonardo DiCaprio. According to Curtis, Maguire earned an estimated $30 to $40 million from these games, which ran until 2009. Curtis also claimed that Molly Bloom, infamously known for hosting these games, was merely the frontwoman for the real operation. The games came to an end after one of the wealthiest participants, Brad Ruderman, was arrested for operating a Ponzi scheme.

Tobey Maguire might have stepped back from public tournaments, but his poker legacy is firmly cemented. Whether at the WSOP tables or behind closed doors in Hollywood mansions, Maguire’s skills, strategy, and success make him one of the most formidable celebrity poker players of all time.
