Phil Kessel, a former National Hockey League (NHL) player, has officially become the newest ambassador for the World Poker Tour (WPT). The three-time Stanley Cup champion will be part of WPT Global’s “Team Canada” initiative aimed at boosting player engagement in the Canadian region.
Despite his long career in hockey, Kessel has also competed in numerous poker events over the years. In the announcement, Kessel stated, “I’m incredibly excited to work with WPT Global. I’ve been an avid poker player for over 20 years and a huge fan of the World Poker Tour.”
WPT Global’s Expansion in Canada
With Kessel’s appointment, it’s clear that the WPT is aiming to strengthen the presence of its online poker platform, WPT Global, particularly in Canada. Phil Kessel will now engage with the Canadian poker community through various poker events and promotions as part of WPT Global’s Team Canada.
Kessel is set to kick off his partnership and make his first appearance at the upcoming WPT Playground Poker Festival in Montreal, running from October 14 to October 30.
As part of his new role, he will also host several invitation-only online poker events. One of such events is the Iron Man Tournament, an online poker event on November 27. The winner of the tournament will receive a VIP package to the WPT World Championship this December.
Iron Man Tournament Prizes
The Iron Man Tournament on November 27 is exclusive to players who register on WPT Global using Phil Kessel’s code “IRONKESSEL81.” The prize breakdown is as follows:
- Winner: VIP WPT World Championship Package, which includes a ticket to Las Vegas, accommodations, a meet-and-greet with Phil Kessel, and a $10,400 entry to the WPT World Championship.
- 2nd – 5th Place Finishers: Jerseys autographed by Phil Kessel.
- 6th – 18th Place Finishers: Autographed ice hockey pucks or 8×10 photographs signed by Kessel.
- Bounty Prize: The player who knocks out Kessel from the tournament will collect a special package that includes a signed jersey, photo, puck, and a WPT Global swag bag, along with a personalized message from Kessel.
Why Kessel Stands Out As An Ambassador
WPT Global’s signing of Kessel is a big move reflecting the ongoing connection between poker and sports. Kessel embodies the spirit of competition and community that both poker and sports share. Alex Scott, President of WPT Global, finds Kessel as a natural fit for their platform.
“Phil has not only proven himself as a world-class hockey player but also as a true poker enthusiast who brings the same passion and dedication to the tables,” Scott said. “His ability to bridge these two worlds—sports and poker—is something we’re really excited about, and we can’t wait to create some unforgettable experiences for our players, especially in Canada.”
