The second largest buy-in event at the 2024 PokerStars European Poker Tour (EPT) Barcelona, the €50,000 Super High Roller Second Chance, drew 26 entries and generated €1,261,260 in the final prize pool.

The tournament saw 19 players competing on Day 1, with only 13 returning for Day 2 with Nick Petrangelo and Jesse Lonis as co-chip leaders. With the late registration still open on Day 2, seven more players joined the action, taking the field to 26. Only five players were set to share the prize pool, and when the dust settled, two high-stakes pros Nick Petrangelo and Leonard Maue emerged victorious and took home the lion’s share of the prize pool after agreeing to an ICM deal.

The final day had elite players in the field, including Poker Hall of Famer Patrik Antonius, WSOP bracelet winner Sam Greenwood, WSOP bracelet winner and two-time EPT champion Mike Watson, and the current GPI ranking leader Jesse Lonis. Despite the fierce competition, Petrangelo and Maue rose above the other players. Petrangelo, the USA’s all-time money leader with more than $37 million in live earnings, added another impressive payout to his resume, while Maue captured his third PokerStars trophy, having previously won a €25k high roller and a €2,000 hyper turbo in 2022.

2024 EPT Barcelona Super High Roller Second Chance Final Day

Action on the final day was fast and furious, resembling a high-stakes Sit ‘n’ Go. Patrik Antonius made an early impact, busting Nacho Barbero and Jules Dickerson to take the chip lead. Nick Petrangelo then scored a double knockout of Thomas Santerne and Mikael Thuritz with ace-king.

However, Jesse Lonis, who started as a co-chip leader, lost a big pot to Morten Klein and later exited on the money bubble after his ace-jack lost to Petrangelo’s ace-queen, with Petrangelo hitting a straight on the turn.

After nearly two levels, Steve O’Dwyer fell to Morten Klein after shoving his Ad 2d into Klein’s pocket queens. Despite scoring the elimination, Klein was the next player to fall.  He lost a flip with king-queen against the pocket fours of Antonius, who hit a full house to win and set up three-handed play. Finnish poker legend Antonius, who was looking strong, got his chips in against Petrangelo who spiked a pair of kings with king-queen against Antonius’ ace-jack to send the veteran pro to the rail in third place.

Quickly after the elimination of Antonius, the final two players agreed to an ICM chop. As chip leader, Petrangelo took the lion’s share, while the coveted trophy went to Maue after he won the agreed upon final hand. Petrangelo held nine-trey and Maue had seven-six suited. Petrangelo ended up pairing his seven to win the title.  Petrangelo took home the biggest payout worth €405,131, while Maue walked away with €383,129, plus the trophy.
