Spanish poker player Cosme Gomez Martinez has been crowned as the champion of Autumn Edition of the Battle of Malta 2024. His journey to victory was nothing short of spectacular as he entered the tournament via a live satellite and was the shortest stack at the final table. Determined to win, he did amazingly well, finishing ahead of defending champion Vasileios Zisis and claiming the coveted title for the €255,800 prize money. This was the first live title for the Spanish poker player who started cashing live tournaments in September 2020.
The Autumn Edition of the Battle of Malta main event was one of the key lightweights on the European live poker scene as the event witnessed record-breaking entries of 5,799 and generated a total prize pool of €2,578,172. And Gomez Martinez proved that even after being short stacked, one can easily win the tournament with skill and determination.
Martinez’s Incredible Comeback From Shortest Stack At The Final Table To Winning The Battle of Malta Title
Cosme Gomez Martinez showed remarkable gameplay despite being a short stack for the majority of the tournament. With his unique skills and effective strategy, he not only won the Battle of Malta Autumn Edition 2024 title but also successfully defeated defending champion Vasileios Zisis, who had won the Spring edition of the tournament in April this year.
Final Table Action
It was a tough final table featuring some solid players, including Pasquale Gregorio and defending champion Vasileios Zisis, who started the table as the massive chip leader. Gregorio was definitely one of the main guys to look out for, but he busted out of the event in 9th place after his pocket jacks couldn’t hold against Farcasanu’s AQ. He was followed by Bulgarian Ivaylo Eftimov who was ahead in the hand against Zisis, but the Greek player spiked trips to send him to the rail in eighth place. A few hands later, Greek Kyriakos Papadopoulos departed after his A♣5♣ was dominated by Farcasanu’s A♥Q♠.
Later, Italian Davide Iannaco became the 6th place finisher. Vasileios Zisis then pulled ahead again after knocking out England’s Shervin Ghasselmou, who exited in fifth place after his A♣3♠ failed to hold against A♥9♣. The eliminations continued, with another Italian Alessandro Siena exiting in fourth place. He was eliminated by Cosme Gomez Martinez, who held A♥9♥ against the pocket sevens of Siena and spiked the 9♦ on the river to bust his opponent.
The next player to fall was Alexandru Farcasanu who held A♣T♦ and lost to the Q♦T♠ of defending champion Vasileios Zisis from Greece to exit in third place, earning €115,800 for his efforts. The elimination moved the tournament to the heads-up with Zisis holding a chip lead of 123m to the Spaniard’s 81m. Interestingly, Cosme entered the final table with the shortest stack but still made it to the heads-up to battle it out for the biggest prize.
Although it looked like Zisis would defend his title, it was not to be. Cosme turned the game in his favour and managed to become the Battle of Malta Main Event champion. He banked a career-best €255,800 for the victory and Vasileios Zisis, who had won the Spring Edition of this tournament for € 100,000 had to settle for runner-up payout of €160,800.
