The 2024 WSOP Calgary Main Event Final Table Recap and Standings
The Main Event was a one-man show, as Alex Liu took over the chip lead by the end of Day 2 and held it until the final hand. 93 players moved to Day 2 and battled to finish in the top 9.
Players exited the final table rapidly, which set off the final table. Liu kicked off the final table with nearly 10 million chips, almost half of the table’s stack.
Zofimo Xavier was the first player to be eliminated from the final table. He ended the deep run in 9th place, taking $16,373. The next elimination further solidified Liu’s massive lead as he knocked out the second in chips Richard Mullen in 8th place for $21,129. Srinivas Gottiparthi was short-stacked and soon followed Mullen to the rail for 7th place, earning $27,786. Shawn Blair followed this in 6th place for $37,220.
The final five returned to the final on Day 3, with Alex Liu holding a massive chip lead, which the four couldn’t overcome. Ten minutes into the final day, Dave S (5th – $50,772) departed from the table as his hand failed to beat Chris Klenentis’s pocket kings.
Alex Liu then sent out Ashkan Razavi in 4th for $70,505, beginning the three-handed play. The three-handed play was intense, and gripping. It lasted over two hours until Chris Klementis was short-stacked and ultimately ended up the day in 3rd place for $99,636.
Aleksei Ponomarev knew he needed big doubles up to come close to Liu’s chip, so he moved all in with Q♠︎6♠︎ against Liu’s K♦3♦. The flop came out K♠︎7♥︎2♠︎, giving Liu a top pair while Ponomarev has a flush draw. But unfortunately, Ponomarev couldn’t hit a spade on the turn or in the river.
Aleksei Ponomarev took home his career-best $143,249 for the runner-up finish. With this victory, Alex Liu ensured that Calgary’s main event trophy remained at home after an Ontario player won the previous WSOP Circuit Calgary Main Event.
