A Look Back At WSOP Europe Champions Over The Years

The WSOP Europe main event has seen several notables winners over the past years, including poker legend Phil Hellmuth and Spanish super star Adrian Mateos. Here is a quick look at the champions crowned over the years:

WSOPE 2007

After purchasing the rights to the WSOP in 2004, Harrah’s Casino announced that it would be partnering with Betfair to bring the World Series of Poker to the region of Europe. This marked the very first expansion of the WSOP brand. Consequently, the 2007 WSOPE took place at Empire Casino in London.

Because of the legal gambling age in England being 18, for the first time ever players under the age of 21 got a chance to participate in the WSOP. Subsequently, Annette Obrestad became the youngest player to win a WSOP bracelet at age 18 years, 364 days. She won the 2007 WSOPE Main Event for £1,000,000.

WSOPE 2008

The inaugural series awarded three bracelets however, looking at the success, the number of bracelets was increased to four the following year. The tournament was once again hosted by the Empire Casino in London. This time it saw several big names again in attendance. It had Phil Ivey final-tabling the £2,500 H.O.R.S.E while 2000 WSOP Main Event winner Chris Ferguson final-tabled the £5,000 Pot-Limit Omaha.

The coveted 2008 WSOPE Main Event was won by John Juanda, who outlasted a starry final table including Daniel Negreanu,  Ivan Demidov and others.

2009 WSOPE

The 2009 WSOPE Main Event was shipped by Barry Shulman for £801,603. He beat Daniel Negreanu in the heads-up, after ‘KidPoker’ recorded back-to-back WSOPE Main Event final tables.

WSOPE 2010

Although WSOPE was being held at the Empire Casino in London, United Kingdom, it took four editions for an English player to headline the WSOPE festival and win a WSOPE bracelet. This feat was accomplished by James Bord who won the 2010 WSOPE Main Event. He walked away with £830,401. Other notable names to win bracelets at the 2010 WSOPE included Phil Laak, Jeff Lisandro and Gus Hansen.

WSOPE 2011

It was a WSOPE 2011, that the series moved to France. It was held at Le Croisette Casino Barrière in Cannes, France. The schedule at this new venue featured seven bracelet events. The 2011 WSOPE Main Event was won by Elio Fox. He beat 593 players to claim the top prize of €1,400,000. Notably, this was also the largest WSOPE Main Event ever.

Michael Mizrachi grabbed his second career bracelet in the €10,400 NLHE Split Format at the series, just a year after shipping the 2010 Poker Player’s Championship for his first.

WSOPE 2012

The WSOPE made a return to Cannes in 2012 and it witnessed the biggest WSOPE winner’s story in history so far. Poker Brat Phil Hellmuth won the 2012 WSOPE Main Event for a paycheque of over €1m to increase his WSOP bracelet tally to 13. With this win, he also became the first player in the history of WSOP to win both the WSOP and WSOPE Main Event.

Apart from the Main Event, Antonio Esfandiari also grabbed his third bracelet. This marked his second bracelet in a span of three months just after he had won the inaugural €1,000,000 Big One for One Drop event at WSOP.

WSOPE 2013

2013 WSOPE now had eight bracelets that were awarded to champions. This time the series was held at Enghien-les-Bains, France located just outside the capital Paris. Roger Hairabedian became the first French WSOPE bracelet winner by shipping one of the tourneys and also became the first player to have won two WSOPE bracelets.

This season was quite an iconic one which saw Daniel Negreanu succeed in the €25,600 High Roller event and grabbed his sixth WSOP bracelet. Besides he also claimed the 2013 WSOP Player of the Year crown in the process.

The 2013 WSOPE Main Event was taken down by 19-year-old Spanish player Adrian Mateos, who went on to beat the home favorite Fabrice Soulier after a heads-up match that lasted for five hours.

WSOPE 2015

After two editions in France, the WSOPE then repositioned to Spielbank Casino, located in the heart of the German capital Berlin. The 2015 series has ten bracelet events on the schedule for the first time. 2010 WSOP Main Event winner Jonathan Duhamel won his third WSOP bracelet in the €25,600 High Roller.

The Main Event of 2015 WSOPE Main Event was claimed by Kevin MacPhee. The event drew only 313 players in the field marking the smallest WSOPE Main Event in history. MacPhee pocketed €883,000 in prize money.

WSOPE 2017

After an outing in Germany, in October 2016 the WSOPE officials announced they had signed a multi-year deal with King’s Casino, Rozvadov. WSOP Executive Director Ty Stewart had said, “I have really bought into Leon [Tsoukernik]’s vision for creating a poker-first destination in Central Europe. With King’s backing large guarantees and media coverage, we believe we have found a long term home for WSOPE to replicate the scale we enjoy in Las Vegas.”

2000 WSOP Main Event winner Chris Ferguson was the biggest winner at the 2017 WSOPE. He won a sixth bracelet in the €1,650 Pot-Limit Omaha Hi-Lo 8 or Better. In the process, he was also named 2017 WSOP Player of the Year.

In the same season, Niall Farrell turned out to be the eighth player to win poker’s Triple Crown by taking down the €25,000 High Roller. The 2017 WSOPE Main Event was shipped by Marti Roca de Torres for €1,115,207. He beat Gianluca Speranza heads-up to win the title.

WSOPE 2018

It was initially announced that King’s Casino would host the WSOPE again in 2019. However, in mid-2018, it was announced that the series would return after just one year.

At WSOPE 2018, the schedule once again featured ten bracelet events. Martin Kabrhel won his second bracelet in the €100,000 Super High Roller after winning his first just one year earlier.

The 2018 WSOPE Main Event was taken down by Jack Sinclair. Former WSOP Main Event winner Ryan Riess was also seen making it to the final table, but was busted in fourth place.

WSOPE 2019

The 2019 WSOPE had 15 bracelets to be won, the most number awarded at a WSOPE in history. This time the schedule included a short deck event and a €100,000 High Roller for the very first time.

Australian player Kahle Burns became the first player to ship two WSOPE bracelets at the same festival, living in the footsteps of the eventual WSOP Player of the Year winner Robert Campbell who had achieved the feat at the 2019 WSOP.

Similarly, Bertrand ‘ElkY’ Grospellier won his career’s second bracelet in the €550 Colossus event. The 2019 WSOPE Main Event was shipped by Alexandros Kolonias. He outlasted 541 players – the second-largest entrants in WSOPE Main Event in history.

WSOPE 2020

The 2020 WSOPE was cancelled like many live poker festivals that were stalled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

WSOPE 2021

In 2021 the WSOPE retured to King’s Resort, Rozvadov with 15 bracelets scheduled. Held from Nov. 19 to Dec. 8, the series offered nearly €12m guaranteed across the festival with buy-ins ranging from €350 to €50,000.

2024 WSOPE Event #8: €25,000 GGMillion€ Quick Recap

This event ran for two days inside Kings Resort Rozvadov in the Czech Republic and fell just short of surpassing the €1,000,000 guarantee. The top six cashed the event, with the World Poker Tour champion Alex Foxen starting the final table as chip leader and Pichierri being in the middle of the pack.

Orpen Kisacikoglu was the first player to fall from the final table after his pocket fives failed to hold up against the A-Q suited of Salih Atac who hit straight to send Kisacikoglu to the rail in ninth place. He was followed by Viktor Blom and Samuel Ju in eight and seventh places respectively.

Samuel Ju also got the last of his stack with A-K and found himself trailing against the pocket aces of Atac whose pair reigned supreme and Ju was eliminated out on the money bubble.

The first player to finish in the money was Sirzat Hissou, who got all-in with a flush draw trailing the two pair of Leon Tsoukernik. The river brought a heart to complete Hissou’s flush, but it also improved Tsoukernik to a full house. Hissou was eliminated in sixth place, earning €65,000.

A little later, Tom-Aksel Bedell shoved his A-6  and got a call from the pocket rockets of Tsoukernik. Bedell picked up the flush draw on the turn, but a brick on the river ended his run in in fifth place (€75,500).

A few hands later, Tsoukernik got it in with pocket queens and was up against pocket kings for Foxen. The board ran out clean and Tsoukernik had to settle for €98,200 as the fourth-place finisher.

Foxen then eliminated Atac in third place. He three-bet shoved Ah 10c over the button open by Atac with Kh Jd. The board ran out As 4h 3c 6d 3h and Atac’s run ended in third place (€141,500).

Heads-up saw Foxen holding 15,000,000 to 4,000,000 for Pichierri. Pichierri quickly closed the gap. Not long after that, he overtook the lead and then extended his lead further.

In the final hand, Foxen limped from the button for 200,000 total with Qc 10d and called a raise to 800,000 from Pichierri, who had Qs Qh. The flop brought 10h 6c 3c to give Foxen top pair. Pichierri bet 900,000  and Foxen raised to 2,100,000. Pichierri three-bet to 4,000,000 and Foxen jammed for 7,325,000. Pichierri called and was in good shape to close out the win. The 7h on the turn and 7s were no help for Foxen and he was eliminated in second place ($248,529) losing the title to Pichierri.

Women continue to shine on the live poker scene and currently in the spotlight is the Brazilian poker pro and 888poker ambassador Vivian Saliba. She etched her name into poker history by winning her first-ever bracelet in Event #4: €2,000 Pot Limit Omaha of the ongoing 2024 World Series of Poker (WSOP) Europe at King’s Resort in Rozvadov. The only female entrant in the tournament, she overcame a star-studded field of 229 entrants and bested Germany’s Markus Anheier in heads-up to claim the €91,400 top prize.

With the victory, she becomes the third champion of the ongoing series, following earlier victories of Poland’s Przemyslaw Szymanski (WSOPE Event #1: €350 No-Limit Hold’em Opener) and Ukraine’s Volodymyr Kokoulin (WSOPE Event #2: €550 Pot-Limit Omaha 8-Max).

Currently ranked 40th on Brazil’s all-time money list, Saliba’s latest victory in Rozvadov is her second-largest career score and marks her fifth final table appearance in a bracelet event. This win pushes her live tournament earnings past the seven-figure milestone. Her biggest cash to date remains her fourth-place finish in the 2019 WSOP Crazy Eights (Event #64), where she earned a hefty $308,888.

Meanwhile, runner-up Markus Anheier walked away with an impressive €59,700, marking the largest cash of his career. The third-place finisher, Hokyiu Lee—who won this event in 2023—fell short of making history with a back-to-back victory, with Saliba dashing his hopes for the repeat title.

2024 WSOP Europe €2,000 Pot-Limit Omaha Event Quick Recap

This event ran over the course of two days and generated €398,231 prize pool. Day 2 lasted more than 17 hours and Saliba hoist the coveted bracelet in the wee hours of the morning on September 26.

The final day began with 50 players with defending champion Hokyiu Lee in the lead. Saliba was the seventh shortest stack heading into the day, but managed to survive and reach the final table.

Lee further extended his lead by eliminating Milan Skacel (8th). Saliba scored her first knockout at the final table when she hit straight on the turn, which was enough to bust Eran Carmi (7th ).

After Samuel Albeck (6th) and Thomas Hueber (5th ) were the next players to leave the final table. Not long after that, Sabic shoved his stack with a straight draw and a pair of sixes facing a flush draw for Anheier. The river gave Anheier a flush and the knockout, ending Sabic’s run in fourth place.

Meanwhile, Saliba won a couple of crucial all-ins during three-handed play that moved her into the chip lead. Lee was looking in great shape for back-to-back victory bu his run ended in third place after he was left short following a clash against Saliba. His last chips went in with Kc 7h 6s 2c facing the As Ks 10d 5s. The board ran out Js 8d 5c 3h 3c and Lee’s run ended in third place for €40,100.

The heads-up saw Saliba holding 7,400,000 to Anheier’s 4,050,000. The turning point came with a big all-in with Anheier’s As Kd Js 10d beating the Ks Kh Jd 6s of Saliba. Anheier made full house by the river to move into the chip lead.

Saliba secured a double up to nearly even in stacks, and then sntached the lead. On the final hand, Anheier limped with Kc 9c 4h 2s and Saliba raised with As Qd 7d 5s. Anheier called and the flop came 9d 7h 4d. The chip went in with Anheier’s nines and fours facing a pair of sevens and a flush draw for Saliba. The turn brought the Ad, giving Saliba a flush. The 5h on the river sealed victory for Saliba.

The 2024 World Series of Poker (WSOP) Europe is currently underway at King’s Resort in Rozvadov and has already crowned two champions. Poland’s Przemyslaw Szymanski won the kickoff Event #1 of WSOP Europe, securing his first bracelet and a six-figure prize of €115,350. Meanwhile, Ukrainian young-gun Volodymyr Kokoulin collected his first gold bracelet in Event #2, crossing the $100k mark in live career earnings. Here is a recap of the first two events of the 2024 WSOP Europe.

WSOPE Event #1: €350 No-Limit Hold’em Opener Recap

The kickoff tournament of the 2024 WSOP Europe drew 3,509 entries, generating a total prize pool of €1,039,014. Only the top 359 players received a payout from the million-euro prize pool with the eventual winner Przemyslaw Szymanski claiming the lion’s share.

Twenty players made it to the final day, but it took just 30 minutes to narrow the field to two tables. Przemyslaw Szymanski entered the final day second in chips but had to overcome many obstacles to emerge victorious. He held a middling stack going into the final table.

Josef Dobos was the first player to exit, finishing in 9th place for €19,407. Viorel Gavrila, who entered the final table as the chip leader, quickly lost his stack and ended in 8th place. Gavrila moved all-in holding Qc-6h, only to run into Rostyslav Sabischenko’s Ac-10d. Sabischenko’s hand held up, sending Gavrila out in the 8th place for €22,050.

Antonio Menga followed Gavrila to the rail, finishing in 7th place and adding €25,700 to his career earnings. Daniel Trunk, who extended his chip lead, sent Georg Strebel out in 6th place for €30,650 after Strebel’s Ad-5d failed against Trunk’s ace-king.

The five-handed play lasted for some time until Dmitrij Fadeev bowed out in 5th place, collecting €37,550. During the five-handed action, Szymanski doubled through chip leader Daniel Trunk to increase his stack.

Szymanski then took the chip lead by winning a massive pot against Alberto Speranzoni, sending him to the danger zone. Speranzoni couldn’t recover from that loss and gave his remaining chips to Trunk. Speranzoni earned €47,250 for his 4th-place finish.

Three-handed play lasted for an hour, with short-stacked Rostyslav Sabischenko trying to hang on. He eventually moved all-in with Ac-9s, only to face Trunk’s pocket sixes. The pocket sixes held on a rainbow board, eliminating Sabischenko in 3rd place for €60,850.

Heads-up

Heading into heads-up play, Trunk held the chip lead over Szymanski, but it didn’t last long. Szymanski doubled up with his ace-king against Trunk’s inferior 6c-4s, leaving Trunk with a crumbling stack.

Though Trunk managed a small double-up, it didn’t take long for Szymanski to secure victory. In the final hand, Szymanski shoved with 9c-3c, and Trunk called with Kc-4d. The board ran out Jd-Ks-3s-Ah-9s, and Szymanski won the hand with two pairs. Trunk finished as the runner-up for €80,150, while Szymanski earned his first WSOP bracelet and a six-figure payday of €115,350.

Event #2 attracted 642 entries at King’s Rozvadov, generating a total prize pool of €301,740, with payouts going to the top 97 players. The final 8 players returned to the final day for the televised final table.

The US poker pro Damjan Radanov was the short stack at the final table and was the first to exit, finishing in 8th place for €5,100. Di Giacomo then secured his second knockout, eliminating Andrei Shpak in 7th place (€6,800).

Austria’s Stefan Kostner got involved in a three-handed battle against Hristiyan Banov and Tomasz Kozub. Unfortunately, his hand didn’t improve, and Banov scooped the pot, sending Kostner out in 6th place for €9,200.

Ivan Nikolov followed shortly after, finishing 5th for €12,600. After his elimination, Volodymyr Kokoulin was on the verge of busting out, but the turn and river saved him with a flush, while Claudio Di Giacomo was left short. Di Giacomo soon busted in 4th place, earning €17,800.

Three-handed play lasted for over an hour until Tomasz Kozub eliminated Hristiyan Banov in 3rd place, setting up heads-up play.

Kokoulin held a massive chip lead going into the heads-up match, and Kozub couldn’t overcome the deficit. In the final hand, Kokoulin three-bet, putting Kozub all-in. Kozub revealed Jh-Jc-8c-5d, while Kokoulin showed Qs-Qh-7d-4s. The board ran out 2d-6s-7c-5h-8d, giving Kokoulin a straight and sealing his victory. Tomasz Kozub finished as the runner-up, earning €37,400, while Volodymyr Kokoulin became the 14th Ukrainian player to win a WSOP gold bracelet.
