As the Indian poker circuit continues to flourish with newer and upcoming talent, the future of the mind sport looks bright in the coming years. The number of players joining the scene and showcasing their unmatched talent and skills is indeed impressive. 

One such player is Avneesh Munjal, an emerging poker talent from India who has displayed exceptional growth and consistency in his poker journey. The Mumbai-based player is known for his strategic gameplay and consistent performances, which have earned him recognition both domestically and internationally. 

The poker pro began his poker journey online before gradually transitioning to live tournaments. He gained significant recognition by grabbing eyeballs with his talent not only in the Indian circuit but also at international poker stages through his consistent performances. His shining poker resume included some significant cashes and titles at prestigious events like the World Poker Tour, Asian Poker Tour as well as deep runs at the World Series of Poker. 

Avneesh Munjal has been playing on the domestic online platforms ever since in 2018. He later made his live poker debut in 2019 at DeepStack Championship Poker Series in Las Vegas. After years of grinding and cashes, he finally nailed his first live title in 2023 at the World Poker Tour Prime – WPT Prime in Hanoi Vietnam. He took down the WPT Opener event for $32,838. This marked a significant milestone in his career, thus boosting his confidence to compete globally.

And ever since he hasn’t looked back. The passionate pro has since then been on a consistent upward trajectory. His participation and in the money (ITM) finishes in prestigious events such as the World Series of Poker (WSOP) and others have further established him as a reckoning force from the Indian poker circuit. 

He claimed his second live title in May this year by taking down the ₫ 5,000,000 + 500,000 No Limit Hold’em – Short Deck (Event #19) at the 2024 Vietnam Poker League – VPL Summer Series in Hanoi, Vietnam. For this he pocketed a handsome $1,852 (₫ 47,000,000). This win preceded his 17th place finish for VN₫ 101.20 Million in the 2024 Vietnam International Poker Tour (VIPT) Hanoi Main Event in April.

Then came the much-awaited WSOP 2024 season and this year he registered an impressive six in-the-money (ITM) finishes at the WSOP, including four bracelet events. These accomplishments further highlighted his growing confidence and expertise at the poker felts. 

Just when he was basking in the glory of a successful WSOP campaign he added another shining feather to his cap by grabbing his first-ever Asian Poker Tour title. He registered a monumental maiden APT title win at the prestigious High Roller – Double Stack event at APT Phu Quoc in 2024. With the historic win, he also earned his career-best $60,981 (₹51.34 Lakhs).

Avneesh Munjal boasts of Total Live Earnings clocking at $213,456 from his six years long live poker career, according to the Hendon Mob. His best live cash to date has been $60,981, which he pocketed after taking down the career-defining ₫ 54,000,000 + 6,000,000 No Limit Hold’em – High Roller Double Stack (Event #29) at the Asian Poker Tour – APT Phu Quoc, Vietnam recently.

Talking of his WSOP exploits, Avneesh Munjal flaunts 8 cashes from the World Series on his poker resume. Owing to these 8 cashes he has earned $36,691 from the WSOP alone.

With more than an envy-worthy 400 online poker titles and countless cashes to his credit, Avneesh has earned a massive ₹7.05 Crore from his online poker exploits. His largest online cash to date has been ₹28,28,741. He banked this massive amount for his runner-up finish at the AOPS ME Finale on Adda52 back in 2020.

Team India continues to shine at the ongoing Asian Poker Tour Phu Quoc 2024, the 82-event series with a whopping VND 44 Billion ($1.70 Million) in guaranteed prizes, which has already crossed its half-way mark.

Following the Natural India Executive Director and Ambassador Kunal Patni’s victory in the VND 4 Million Tick Tock BOOM! Super Hold’em, another Indian player from Mumbai, Avneesh Munjal, shone for India, claiming victory in Event #29: VND 60 Million High Roller – Double Stack for VND 1.541 billion (INR 51.34 Lakhs)..

Munjal, a dominant force both in live and online poker arena, navigated his way to the top through a tough field of 117 entries. His journey to victory was nothing short of spectacular as he started the final day as one of the shortest stacks but staged an incredible comeback.

He surged to the lead and maintained it, ultimately seizing victory and earning him a career-best VND 1.541 billion (INR 51.34 Lakhs).

The latest win was Munjal’s first-ever APT title and second title of 2024, following his victory in the Short Deck (Event #19) at the VPL Summer Series Hanoi in May and making it his third live poker title overall.

In the final heads-up battle, Munjal battled it out against Event #3: Single Day High Roller – Freezeout winner Mingcong Chen from China. The latter put up a strong fight but ultimately fell short in an over two-hour long heads-up battle, finishing as the runner-up with VND 1.042 Billion ($41,106). This marked his second biggest score of the year.

Another Indian who made his mark in the High Roller – Double Stack was  Amit Kaushik. The 28-year-old poker prodigy from Haryana finished in eighth place for VND205.30 Million (INR 6.84 Lakhs). Kaushik,  who has won live titles at the prestigious stops like the WPT, APT, USOP, WPC, and the DPT, also made a strong impact in #42: Turbo of the series, finishing sixth out of the 75-entry field and taking home VND 39,940,000.

Kunal Patni Scores His Fourth Final Table Finish In #41: Turbo – Double Stack 

Other Indians who added to Team India’s latest success in the series were Natural8 India director Kunal Patni and Myron Pereira. Patni, who kicked India’s campaign in style with two final table finishes and a victory in the VND 4 Million Tick Tock BOOM! Super Hold’em is on fire.

Patni came close to winning another title in the series, finishing in a strong fourth place in Event #41: Turbo – Double Stack and claiming VND 101,450,000 – his biggest score in the ongoing series. He battled his way through a star-studded field of 127 entries, which was eventually topped by Vietnam’s own Do Tien Vu, who walked away with a hefty VND 278,940,000 for his remarkable win.

Myron Pereira Finishes Runner-up #44: Hyper Turbo Event

Long-time Indian pro Myron Pereira nearly clinched victory in Event #44: Hyper Turbo – Hold’em “Limits” (Limit Pre, PL Flop, NL Post) but eventually lost the title to China’s Zhang Wangcheng and settled for the runner-up prize worth VND 21,850,000. Wangcheng took home VND 32,778,000 for his first-place finish. The top three were paid out, with Singapore’s Zhen Wei Yeo rounding out the podium finishes with  VND13,660,000 for the third-place finish.

Three Indians Shine in #46: Super Hyper Turbo Event

An impressive three Indians made it to the final table in Event#46: Super Hyper Turbo, taking India’s final table tally to 12. The event drew 63 entries and found its winner in Vietnam’s Bui Xuan Truong, who walked away with VND 61,992,800. Thailand’s Sorawit Turaphan placed runner-up for VND 44,660,000. Taking the final spot on the podium was India’s Prajit Ghambir, who banked VND 29,030,000 for his podium finish. The other two Indians to make their mark were Bharti Harsh (VND 21,900,000) who earlier placed fifth for VND 2,47,40,000 in Event #37: Tick Tock BOOM, and Akhand Shukla, who finished 9th, earning VND 6,380,000 for his first cash of the series.

Amidst this whirlwind of excitement, Indian poker players are once again shining bright, continuing their remarkable streak of success following triumphant showing at the recent events like the HSOP Championship, Vietnam Poker Tour (VIPT) Hanoi, and Poker Dream 10 Vietnam.Indian pro Avneesh Munjal, hailing from the bustling city of Mumbai, emerged victorious in Event #19: Short Deck, etching his name in poker history and marking a monumental milestone as the first Indian to claim victory in a live Short Deck event at the VPL Summer Series, which kicked off on May 3 and will be running all the way until May 13, 2024.  Munjal’s victory signifies his first live tournament win of 2024, setting the stage for even greater triumphs on the horizon.

Short Deck – VPL Summer Series Hanoi 2024 Recap

This Short Deck event featured a buy-in of VND 5,500,000 and a starting stack of 10,000, with the late registration lasting till the start of Level 9. The event drew 19 entries and generated VND 92,150,000 in the final prize pool, which was finally shared by the top three finishers with Munjal taking home the top prize worth VND 47,000,000. Munjal also competed in Event 8 Megastack and finished 23rd for a payday of VND 15,000,000.

Munjal eventually defeated Vietnam’s Tran Hung Manh in heads-up, with the latter banking VND 27,000,000 for his runner-up finish. Tran Trong Nhan rounded out the podium finishes, taking home VND 18,150,000 for his third-place finish.

Other Notable Performances by Indians

But Munjal was not the sole torchbearer of Indian poker prowess at the VPL Summer Series. Joining him in the pursuit of glory were veteran poker pro Jasven Saigal and Siddharth Mishra , whose stellar performances have further solidified India’s dominance on the global poker stage.

In Event #16: Mini High Roller, Saigal showcased his exceptional skills by securing 5th place for a substantial VND 60 Million payday. Meanwhile, Mishra’s impressive display of strategic prowess saw him clinch 3rd place in Event #15: Deepstack, walking away with a handsome VND 40 Million prize.

After 10 electrifying days, the 2024 Vietnam International Poker Tour (VIPT) Hanoi concluded at the Grand Plaza Hotel, with Australia’s William Jia emerging triumphant in the VN₫ 40 Billion VIPT Main Event. Besting a field of 624 competitors, Jia clinched the prestigious main event title and a whopping  VN₫ 2.26 Billion in top prize. His journey to victory was highlighted by a gripping three-handed showdown where he was the shortest stack but he busted Phương USA in third place (VN₫ 1.02 Billion) to gain the momentum. Finally, he clashed with local favorite Nguyen Van Sang in heads-up battle. 

In the climatic final hand, Jia raised to 500K, Van Sang 3-bet to 1.70 Million, and Jia made it to 3.70 Million. Van Sang shoved for 6 Million, and Jia responded with a shove for 13 Million, which Van Sang called holding pocket kings against Ac Qc of Jia. Unfortunately for Van Sang, the board ran out Ad 6s 5d 6d 2c, giving Jia two higher pairs to seal the coveted title and the VN₫ 2.26 Billion top prize.

Coming to the Indian performance in the VN₫ 22 Million buy-in Main Event, we saw six Indian players qualify for Day 2 among 80 qualifiers, each guaranteed at least VN₫ 34 Million. Avneesh Munjal and Neel Joshi headlined India’s scorecard, with the former finishing 17th for VN₫ 101.20 Million and Neel Joshi placing 18th for the same prize.

Other notable finishes were scored by Amit Kaushik (30th place for VN₫ 72.10 Million), Pocket52 Team Pro Laksh Pal Singh (33rd for VN₫ 59.20 Million), Himanshu Chhikara (38th place for VN₫ 59.20 Million), and Suresh Kolli (72nd place for VN₫ 37.40 Million).
